Genre: Scholarly catalogue History

The use of literary and other catalogues of texts kept in ancient archives or libraries is not entirely known. Some may have served as scholarly exercises on their own (surveys of existing texts in collections; scholarly ordering of texts with comments, etc.), and others may have served simply to identify other texts in text containers.
