Seals are small incised objects often made of semi-precious stones that were stamped or rolled over wet clay so as to leave an impression. The category of Seal includes all cylinder seals and stamp seals whether their primary function was personal documentation, demonstration of office or amuletic in nature. Here ‘Seals’ are defined as the physical incised objects as opposed to the impressions. For the impressions – both ancient impressions on tablets and clay stoppers – see the category of Sealing.
